From a North Face first timer - what experiences (good or bad) have previous competitors had with hiking sticks to help you up some of the steeper mountains? Did the stairs out of Nellies Glen yesterday after a 40km warmup and they sure were hard work on the legs alone.

I am a first timer to the TNF100, and I also plan to take my treking poles just to cover all bases. Incase I have any problems they will get me home, not interested in DNF. Another question I have is do you have to carry the poles for the whole course, or can you grab them from a later check point!!

Hiking poles do work up hill. I found two strong sticks at the bottom of Ironpot and used them to the top last year. A climb of about 400mtrs after CP2. They do save the legs.

I collected my walking poles last year at the half way CP in anticipation of the hills coming up Nellies Glen and up to the Queen Vic hospital - they were great. I had support meet me at Queen Vic and offloaded them after the hill.

Get the hiking sticks from the bush and pole vault up the hills! Nah, seriously Poles do save the legs up hills. I'm not going to carry them tho...

Anybody got any tips on the best place to purchase hiking sticks, and the best and most appropriate for TNF?

I did my first NF100 last year. Trekking Poles are well worth the money. Nellies Gully is "sporty" to say the least. But the "hill of death" (as someone described it last year) back up to the 89 km mark is testing, especially for tired legs. Then there are the down hill sections.

Just wondering what the concensus was on the poles after the 2011 race? I regularly use Lekis to trek but these are too big and cumbersome for TNF. I was looking at the foldable black diamonds (short and light, but no where near as robust as the lekis) or a Komperdell carbon (more robust but does not shorten as much as the black diamonds). Just wondering what people ended up using in 2011 and whether they were worth while.

Used a cheap 35 buck pair that I bought on eBay. Left them in my cp3 bag and used them for the last couple of stages. I don't think it really maters what brand but the more foldable the better. Very useful for the long climb out of Kedumba

you'll want to check that the black diamond z-poles fit your bag as they fold up quite short. Too short to fit properly on the back of the Salomon packs for instance.

The Komperdells are a little heavy I use black diamond carbon cork and love them. If your planning on running they area little annoying to take on and off your pack as are all but poles make a huge difference on your legs. If your planning on walking it or truthfully any part of it use the poles but 1st learn the correct way to do it as I work in the industry and 98% of people buying them have zero idea...

I've worked out that since I borrowed one pole last year and it was very successful, I would use the BD Z poles and leave them at CP4 to pick up, particularly for the last 11km, and to help up Kedumba. Can run some of it but not all. That last 11km though....Man, it's a killer.
