Hi all,

Just an update for those planing to do some training on The North face 100 course in the next few weeks.  The Blue Mountains have received a great deal of rain over the past 2 weeks and there are some sections which have been damaged.  The course will be fine for the event itself but for now we would ask that you don't try to run Leg 5 (Katoomba Oval to Queen Victoria Hospital) because the fire trail got washed out just near the Old Sewerage Treatment Works to the point where there is only a very narrow strip of soft earth on the edge of what was the road.  Also during week days there will be traffic on the road from Kedumba Pass towards this section of damaged road (usually there is none) for the coming weeks for construction crews to access and repair the damage.

The track across the top of Wentworth Falls is currently closed, as the balustrade got washed away.
Undercliff Track between Princes Rock and Den Fenella is also closed at the moment.

In general there is lots of debris and branches on most of tracks and fire roads on the course at the moment.  All damage will be repaired prior to the event. However, it would be wise to just check with Blue Mountains National Parks before you commence training on the course any time in the next month. Check the website for track closures and conditions; http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/NationalParks/parkFireClosure.aspx?id=N0004 or call The National Parks office at Blackheath on (02) 4787 8877.

Cheers,
Tom

HI Tom;

Don't forget to mention the very large cedar tree that has come down on the trail near the Leura cascades that blocks quite a bit of the track, you have to do a bit of scrambling and bashing your way through lots of dismembered foliage to stay on track. Mind you the cascades did look awesome the day after some of the heaviest rainfall, made for an interesting training run.

Cheers

Thanks for the update Kevin.  It's good to get first hand information of know how the various sections of the track are looking.  If anyone else has seen any other damage on the track please write in.  Sounds like the cascades were looking good.

Cheers,

Hi Tom,
Investigated the last leg of TNF last weekend and as well as the flattened balustrade at the Falls, there is significant damage to the Undercliff/overcliff track, near Princes Rock lookout area (?). An area of the track has slipped away leaving only a narrow path to cross close to the cliff face, there are also hand railings that have been brought down by the force of the water and further on 2 stepping stone blocks have been washed down steam at the 2nd(?) creek crossing (Valley of Waters Creek) as you approach Lilians Bridge from Edinburgh Caslte Rock. Hopefully all repairable in time for the race.
And as Kevin said the waterfalls were awesome!

Cheers,
Anne
